Today I was listening to “Misery Signals,” a (in my opinion) very good metal band out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This band raises an interesting question about faith that I would like to comment on.
In their song titled “A Certain Death,” the question is asked, “Why would you really want to live forever?”
This is to say that you don’t really need all that religion stuff. I mean, come on, do you really want to live forever, anyway?
This kind of question is based on the idea that religion is like a buffet, where one comes to the table and picks and chooses what he wants. In truth, many view their religion this way, but this isn’t the way it SHOULD be. The problem is that Christianity might be true whether one likes it or not. It actually doesn’t matter that much if one wants to live forever or not. It is bad form to debate something based on personal preferences. Two plus two equals four, and this truth is entirely independent from whether one likes it or not.
